Topology-Aware Reliable Group Communication in Geographically Large-Scale Systems

The TOPCOM project aims at implementing some of the protocols designed by the Navigators group using the Ensemble protocol kernel. The purpose of this project is twofold. In first place, it will make available stable implementations of these protocols and gather performance data from the new implementation. In second place, this experiment will emphasize the generic aspects of the Ensemble framework and reveal its potential limitations. The project will gather feedback from protocol implementers in order to get a better understanding of the tradeoffs involved in building protocol kernels that support flexible composition of micro-protocols.

Activity

The first year of activity was centered on three main topics:
Work in the area of reliable group communication protocols and algorithms, that are the basis of Navigators Group technology.
Implementation of the protocols and algorithms mentioned before in the Ensemble platform.
Study of alternative platforms to Ensemble (Appia)
